David Martin's 1952 Christmas banner

The photo above shows Martin Markley at left and Dave Martin at right with one of the propaganda banners that appeared over Christmas Eve 1952 in front of the MLR between OP Dick and OP Harry at the upper end of Happy Valley. According to Dave's description it was a large Christmas Tree with several banners hung, apparently very stealthily during the night, and revealed to our troops at daybreak!

There is an article in the June 2001 issue of the "Watch on the Rhine" by Lendon Pearson (15th Inf) describing a similar Christmas Tree incident on Christmas 1951 in front of OP Nori. That tree had been booby trapped and several Belgian soldiers were killed when they tried to retrieve the "gifts" from the Chinese.
