I am trying to get reservations for Richmond, Va to go and see Jack Newman. By the time I got everything organized to be sure he would feel like visiting, now can't get the fare I had last week. I want to go 9/17 and back 9/19 but now they want you to stay longer.

Hi Sam,
Hope it works out for you to get to see Jack Newman and you don't get hung up by the airline juggling fares, rules, and conditions.
Brad.

Subject: Making Connections book
Hi Sam,
I'm sending on a copy of the 400 page "Making Connections" book the Fort Morgan Museum and the Morgan County School District Re-3 produced has sent me.
The book is a collection of information about the 1945-1963 Cold War Era as viewed from the perspective of the people living in Fort Morgan Colorado at the time, and clearly is the thoughtful product of many dedicated people. You are mentioned in the book and I'd promised to forward copies to those whose name were used.
Sam, I'm also sending a copy to Joel Newman as I don't have Jack Newman's address -- nor do I have an email address for either one. If you do contact him you might let him know it is one the way. They have reprinted the letter exchange between you and Joel and I though the Newman's would be interested.
Thanks.
Brad.

Hi Sam,
I wish you the best in your meeting with Jack Newman and I hope that Hurricane Isabell doesn't interfere.

Thanks, Brad. Got back to Ia at 2AM yesterday.
I called Jack Newman's son, Joel today (Sun) and he was still sawing trees from around his house. Is about out of oil for his chain saw.
Jack is still out of power, but has a generator to keep refrig going and sump pump working.
They all are lovely people and I am so glad I was able to shake Jack's hand, give him a hug and say, "Thanks"

Good morning Sam,
That was quite an odyssey and sounds like it was very satisfying and timely.

Subject: Trip to Va
Did I tell you guys that I finally worked in a trip to Richmond to meet the FO who got me off the Hill?
I worked out a schedule with Jack Newman's son, Joel to go out to see them Sept 17th thru the 19th.
Jack had a severe stroke 4 years ago and right side is paralyzed , in a wheel chair and can't communicate. At least I was able to give him a big hug and thank him for dragging me off. Has a good strong grip in that left hand.
He has a beautiful home in Richmond and his son, Joel and his family live in the same town. His wife insists that she keep him at home with the help of a lady who comes in each day to help care for him, but other-wise she does it all, with what help Joel and his family are able to provide.
What a great reunion! Wish we could have gotten together a few years sooner.
Jack retired from the Guard as a Col, and raised 3 outstanding sons. Grad from
Virginia Tech as a chemical engineer ( I think)
Another interesting note, Hurricane Isabel hit the next day after I got there, so was holed up in my motel without lights and telephone all night and then was delayed 12 hours at the airport getting out of there.
It was worth it all.
