The Outpost Harry Survivors Association
July 4, 2015
Outpost Harry is now also OP53 in the Society of the 3rd Inf. Div.
Today I received this email from Joe Ball, the President of the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division announcing that 11 members of the 3rd I.D. Society have transfered their current Outpost membership to the Outpost Harry OP53. A 3rd I.D. Outpost must have at least 10 members -- any less and the Outpost is dissolved.
Many of you are familiar with the Battle for “Outpost Harry” in June 1953. It was a difficult situation. “Hold at all costs” was the order given to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment. With support from Engineers, Signal, and effective artillery support, the 3rd Infantry Division did exactly what they were ordered to do.
With age as a common enemy, the Outpost Harry Survivors Association was destined for extinction: not true as of today. The OHSA Outpost #53 (the year of the battle) exists as a recognized outpost in our Society. President Jim Hafer and Secretary-Treasurer Doug Jones will lead Outpost #53.
The principles of honor, courage, and devotion to duty exhibited in battle will and has served these survivors well.
There may be other specialty groups that want to form outposts. Our By-laws were updated recently to allow this. The Anzio groups come to mind.
Welcome, Outpost #53 members.
Yours in the 3rd,
In the upcoming Survivor newsletter there will be instructions on how to transfer your current 3rd I.D. membership to Outpost Harry OP53, if you want to. Changing your membership in a 3rd I.D. Outpost has no affect on your membership in the OPHSA. If you are an OPHSA member, you remain a member.
Happy 4th of July.
