The two pictures above were taken on the rear slope of the first hill behind the MLR close to the railroad tracks. The mortar platoon was directly to the right rear. Since the men of Machinegun and Recoilless Rifle platoons were attached to the rifle companies only the men of the Mortar platoon were fed on line by M Company mess. Food was transported from the rear by jeep trailer in insulated, thermal containers. To be sure that enough food was brought, I would be the last person to eat. On the cold days it was not unusual that by the time the last food was served some of it was almost frozen.
